Imphal, Dec. 14: Manipur Brothers Sporting Union defeated Sambalpur Football Academy, Orissa, 5-0 in the quarter-final league round of the 52nd Sir Churchand Singh Memorial Football Tournament at Mapal Kangjeibung today.
The Sambalpur Football Academy medios failed to rise to the occasion.
The team’s forward hardly made any impressive effort except in the second half, which, however, failed to bear fruit.
Manipur Brothers Sporting Union displayed grit and pace in their attack and their forward delivered exceptionally well with a hattrick from N. Dhananjay Singh.
Five minutes into the play, Th. Roshan Meitei provided a cross to the left penalty areas where L. Boipu Doungel shot home the first goal. In the 32nd minute, N. Dhananjay Singh scored the second goal.
Sambalpur Football Academy tried to step up their efforts but failed to penetrate the rival’s goalmouth.
Dhananjay Singh struck again in the 52nd minute for the team’s third goal and went on to score the fourth goal in the 57th minute. With repeated attacks by the Manipur Brothers, Sambalpur Football Academy seemed to have no clue what to expect next.
The Sambalpur defence gave way in the 81st minute, as Ksh. Devkumar Singh made a mid-field pass to Th. Roshan Singh, who shot the ball into the goalmouth and shot a low grounder to score the Manipur Brothers Sporting Association’s fifth goal.
In the dying moment, N. Dhananjay mistimed a golden opportunity, while Salkhan Soren also missed an easy chance.
In tomorrow’s quarter-final, defending champions North Imphal Sporting Association will meet North Eastern Re-Organising and Cultural Association.
