Shillong, Aug. 14: To continue fostering friendly relations between the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Bangladesh Rifles along the Indo-Bangladesh border, the two today organised a get-together at the Dawki-Tamabil international border on the eve of Independence Day.
Cultural functions, music and interaction among people from both sides of the border were the highlights of the day, as personnel from both the forces sang and danced to Hindi songs and music belted out by the BSF. Later, the two sides distributed sweets and exchanged pleasantries.
The BSF was led by S.K. Singh, commanding officer of the 121st Battalion, while Gullam Maulla, commanding officer of the 21st Battalion, headed the BDR.
The event forms part of efforts to reduce tension along the Indo-Bangladesh border and ensure congenial relations between both sides.
“Both our countries share a border, as well as a rich history. We must continue to build bridges of friendship between us,” Maulla said. For the BDR, it was an opportunity to “come closer to the people of both sides who live along the border,” he added.
A BSF jawan said, “Events such as these have enabled better understanding between the two forces.”
Schoolchildren and people from both sides of the border were allowed to spend time with each other.
“It is the occasion for friends and family members to spend some great moments together,” said residents living along the border.
The BSF has initiated a number of events, such as a football match that was organised at the Dawki Indo-Bangladesh border.
The BDR has also made elaborate plans to organise similar events in Bangladesh.
