Agartala, Sept. 11: Blood Mouth Club yesterday regained the Chandra memorial football league title after a gap of two years, beating Town Club by the odd goal in three.

Calcutta boy Ranjan Majhi and Nigerian import Moses scored the brace for Blood Mouth, while Satyajit Debroy reduced the margin for Town Club. The winners had garnered 26 points in 10 matches, winning eight and drawing two. Tripura State Rifles, which grabbed the second spot in the league, had 16 points.

Blood Mouth Club, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, had scored a unique double by snatching the Rakhal Shield knockout football tournament, beating Tripura State Rifles a couple of days before the league championship.

Amid celebrations by fans at the UK Academy ground here, club secretary Chandan Sen said hard work put in by the players has paid off with triumphs at the league and knockout meets. This was Blood Mouth’s fifteenth league title.

The club’s task was made easier by arch-rivals Agiye Chalo Sangha opting out of the league in the second leg when they lost their match against the eventual winners by a solitary goal.

It was sweet revenge for Blood Mouth, who lost the last two leagues to Agiye Chalo Sangha.

Sen said the next target of his club would be an unprecedented treble by winning the Laki-Srivastava knockout tournament organised by the ONGC.

Agiye Chalo Sangha secretary Anal Roy Chowdhury, who had fielded a star-studded team with four Nigerians, pulled out in protest against poor refereeing.

Controversial refereeing marred the league and knockout tournaments this year. Anjan Banik and Shibajyoti Chakraborty, both referees in the national panel, failed to conduct matches without provoking controversies.

The Tripura Football Association had to hire two referees from Manipur — P. Jaychandra and Kironjit Singh.

However, even these two referees could not live up to their mark. Agiye Chalo Sangha pulled out of the league in protest against decisions given by Jaychandra.
