Nagaon, Aug. 26: Hundreds of protesters, backed by AASU and the Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), today blocked train tracks at Kampur in Nagaon district for an hour from 10am, demanding a high-level inquiry into Tuesday's incident in which pro-talks Ulfa members were assaulted by some goons and demanded stern steps against the culprits.
As a result of the blockade, the Dibrugarh-bound Shatabdi Express had to halt for an hour at Kampur station. The protesters have called a 12-hour Kampur bandh today from 5am in support of their demand. Kampur is 35km from Nagaon district headquarters.
"We have submitted a list of five culprits who along with another four, who were arrested earlier, carried out the attack on Tuesday. We demand the arrest of five persons immediately," leader of the Sangrami Youtha Mancha, Ratul Hazarika, said.
The organisation has been launched to put pressure on the government for an impartial inquiry into Tuesday's incident.
A Nagaon police source said one Rajib Chakrabarty, who was allegedly involved in the assault incident, was arrested from Nagaon town today. The number of persons arrested is now 10. They include five pro-talks Ulfa leaders and five traders.
The superintendent of police, Nagaon, Deebraj Upadhay said an investigation is on very "smoothly, seriously and impartially." "Rajib Chakrabarty was arrested this morning as his involvement in the assault has been established. We are looking for a few others in connection with the case," he said.
Pro-talks Ulfa leaders Arabinda Rajkhowa, Jiten Dutta and local leaders have submitted a memorandum to Nagaon deputy commissioner Shamsher Singh, demanding arrests of five other persons who, they alleged, were involved in the incident. They have threatened to take up arms again if such attack on Ulfa members were repeated.
