Shillong, Feb. 3: The BJP in Meghalaya today reiterated its demand for a free and fair probe into the allegations levelled against former governor V. Shanmuganathan and hailed him for setting a good example by relinquishing the post.

The party also intensified its demand that Meghalaya home minister H.D.R. Lyngdoh should resign from his post, as a minor girl was sexually exploited in the guesthouse (Marvelene's Inn) run by his son.

"We want an inquiry into the allegations and the truth must come out. The former governor set a good example by resigning from the posts of governor of Arunachal and Meghalaya to ensure a free and fair investigation. The home minister (Lyngdoh) who is reluctant to relinquish the post, and chief minister Mukul Sangma who is also defending him, should learn from the former governor," state BJP vice-president Bashailang Khongwir told reporters here.

The BJP leader also did not rule out a conspiracy behind the allegations levelled against Shanmuganathan by Raj Bhavan staff.

"We suspect a conspiracy in which the state government is involved. Most of the Raj Bhavan staff had signed the letter sent to the Centre without knowing the reason. That is why we want a fair probe," he added.

Shanmuganathan quit as governor of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh on January 26 following allegations that he was "seriously compromising" the dignity of office and accusing him of turning Raj Bhavan into a "young ladies' club".
