Agartala: A Tripura BJP on Thursday met the full panel of the Election Commission and discussed several issues, including the presence of fake Bangladeshi voters in electoral rolls and rise in crime in the poll-bound state.

At a news conference here on Thursday evening, BJP spokesperson Arun Kanti Bhowmik said the poll panel assured them that it would take steps to ensure free and fair elections.

Bhowmik said degeneration of law and order, issues with presence of false voters in electoral rolls, choice of poll observers, polling personnel, and other issues were discussed. Asked if the party demanded to defer the Assembly polls, he said "no such demand was made".

The Election Commission, in a special summary revision, deleted names of nearly 28,000 voters from the draft voter list in November.

"We still feel there are names of false voters in the current list," he said.

Bhowmik tried to defend his party's stand on allegation against chief minister Manik Sarkar's role in creating a stand-off between the government and Raj Bhavan.

The governor had summoned chief secretary and DGP for certain queries. The duo were stopped by Sarkar, the BJP alleged.
