Dhemaji, April 25: Shops and business establishments in Bihpuria town under La-khimpur district of Upper Assam were closed today, following a clash between tra-ders and a few youths who we-re collecting donation for Bihu celebrations last evening.

A district administration team visited Bihpuria this afternoon to settle the matter and bring back normality.

"The trigger was a misunderstanding between the business community and the youths. No one asked the shopkeepers to down shutters, but they themselves chose to do so. The matter is now settled," Lakhimpur deputy commissioner Barun Bhuyan told The Telegraph.

Four youths of Lakhimpur Kendria Bihu Mela were collecting donations from the traders for a Bihu programme in Lakhimpur when an altercations broke out. Later, three youths - Joy Jyoti Gogoi, Manash Pratim Saikia and Pulin Baruah - were handed over to Bihpuria police by the traders. The fourth youth, Raju Tamuli, escaped.

The traders staged a protest in front of the police station and demanded punishment to those who were caught. However, the police dispersed the protesters.

Various organisations turned out in favour of the youths who came for donation, which led to the clash.

Lakhimpur superintendent of police Sudhakar Singh today said the situation in Bihpuria was under control and a few shops opened this afternoon.
