Jorhat, Feb. 12: Two more students died in an accident on National Highway 37 at Panitola in Tinsukia district today as Tinsukia town observed a spontaneous bandh in protest against the death of a school boy in a mishap on the highway at Makum yesterday.
The duo were travelling on a motorcycle and were hit by a truck. Both died on the spot.
The administration promised to review the traffic scenario in the district.
Tinsukia deputy commissioner, S.S. Minakshi Sundaram, today visited the house of Raghav Maheswari, 4, at Makum. The boy had died on the spot when he was knocked down by a speeding bus while he was crossing NH 37.
Sundaram promised the people gathered at Raghav’s house that all necessary measures would be taken to check the speed of vehicles, particularly those plying on NH 37.
Yesterday’s incident was the fifth in Makum in the past four days. Three of the victims were students.
Tinsukia town wore a deserted look with schools and business establishments remaining closed for the day. Vehicles went off the road.
Residents, including members of the business community, took out a rally this morning and demanded measures to check the speed of vehicles on the highway. Hundreds of protesters were arrested but were released later.
Yesterday, the protesters had lifted the eight-hour blockade at 9pm, leaving many vehicles stranded on the highway.
