Nagaon, April 26: Altogether 24 indigenous organisations have called a 59-hour strike in Karbi Anglong from midnight tonight demanding revision of electoral rolls for the upcoming Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) elections.

The organisations want the names of non-Karbis, who settled in the hill district after 1951, to be deleted from the electoral rolls. The organisations said council elections should be held only after this issue is resolved.

On Friday, more than 300 supporters of different indigenous organisation carried out a nude march through Diphu in support of the same demand.

The 24 organisations have two other demands - implementation of measures to safeguard the rights of indigenous people and an end to the BJP-led KAAC's misrule.

The organisations have floated a platform - Sixth Scheduled Implementation Committee - which has filed a public interest litigation in Gauhati High Court showcasing that giving electoral power to those living in Karbi Anglong after 1951 stands in the way of the tribals enjoying the Sixth Schedule benefits.

Karbi Anglong deputy commissioner Adil Khan today called a meeting with various non-political organisations of the hill district to find a solution to the current crisis.

"We told them that the matter is sub-judice and any more steps like protest or agitation on the issue could mean contempt of court. The platform leadership asked us for a meeting with the council leadership on the issue and we agreed to intimate the matter to the council authorities," Khan said after the discussion ended.

The deputy commissioner said he would write a letter to the council's principal secretary, intimating him about the developments.

"If anything within the umbrella of a Sixth Schedule council is to be reviewed, it is beyond the power of the local administration," Khan said.

The leaders of the organisations later addressed a news conference in Diphu town and reiterated that their democratic movement will continue until and unless their demands are fulfilled.

A high-level KAAC source today claimed that the demands of the organisations are baseless and they are engineered by some persons with vested interests.

"Electoral rolls are revised as per norms and the system cannot listen to an undemocratic concept of revision. If they want an end to the existing council body, instead of a nude protest they should join politics for formation of a new council in the upcoming elections," the council source said.
