Guwahati, April 5: Sivasis Biswas was appointed the third pro-vice-chancellor of the Diphu campus of Assam University following a prolonged protest by students.
The appointment of a pro-vice-chancellor was one of the demands of the Assam University Diphu Campus Students' Union, which recently carried out protests by locking the main the gate of the campus for 14 days.
Biswas, who was the head of the department of English on the campus, was appointed to the post yesterday.
The post of pro-vice-chancellor was vacant for about two years after the retirement of Dilip Kumar Pandey. Amolesh Bhowal was appointed the professor in-charge of the post of pro-vice-chancellor.
The student union had alleged that development of the campus had halted after the appointment of Bhowal, who seldom had the powers of a pro-vice-chancellor.
The union had raised many demands for the development of the campus but Assam University did not respond to it.
Then, from March 10, the union had locked the main gate of the campus and demanded the vice-chancellor of the university to visit the campus immediately and review the issues.
This protest lasted for 10 days where vice-chancellor Dilip Chandra Nath visited the campus on March 24 and bilateral talks were held between him and the the union, after which the students withdrew their agitation.
