Guwahati, March 1: The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS)'s movement against big dams in the Northeast, seeking land for the landless in Assam and a river-linking project may get a boost with Gandhian activist Anna Hazare deciding to take part in a convention in the state on March 20.

Hazare will address members and supporters of the KMSS on the concluding day of a three-day convention at Disao Botua village playground in Upper Assam' Sivasagar district.

The convention, beginning on March 18, will discuss issues such as challenges faced by farmers and agriculture, big dams, river linking and politics of water resources in China, India and Bhutan.

P.V. Rajagopal, the leader of Ekta Parishad, another organisation fighting for land rights, and river expert Himangshu Thakkar will also take part in the convention.

"We have been fighting for the farmers, their rights over land and the anti-farmer policy adopted by governments both at the Centre and in the state. Participation of Anna ji and Rajagopalji will definitely boost our movement against the anti-people policies," KMSS president Akhil Gogoi said here today.

Akhil and some KMSS members recently joined the rally organised by Hazare in New Delhi to oppose the ordinance for amendment in the Land Acquisition Act 2014.

Sources said the KMSS has invited Anna for discussion on its plan to announce the launch of a new political party ahead of next year's Assembly polls in Assam.

"We will formally announce a new political force, which will be against the Congress and the BJP and will offer an alternative to the people. But we will make a formal announcement after a thorough discussion during the convention," Akhil said.

Akhil was part of Team Anna's India against Corruption campaign, which slowed down after formation of the Aam Aadmi Party by Arvind Kejriwal.

Akhil had publicly expressed resentment over the formation of a political party by Kejriwal and had declined to be its part. Now KMSS's preparation for a new political party ahead of next year's polls is raising questions too.

Intellectuals and experts from Gauhati University, Dibrugarh University, Assam Agriculture University, IIT Guwahati, lawyers and people from different walks of live from all over the state will take part in the convention.

"Experts will discuss the politics over water resources, including construction of dams by India, Bhutan and China, vis-à-vis safety concerns of the people living in the Northeast," Akhil said.

The KMSS president also said that the Union budget as was against the interest of Assam and opposed the cut in Centre's allocation for the state as proposed by the 14th Finance Commission.

He said the commission has proposed to withdraw the special catergory state status to Assam.
