Guwahati, Feb. 9: Amlan Mahanta annexed the title in the 10th edition of the GTC Chess Grand Prix held at the Gauhati Town Club here today.

Mahanta tallied 5.5 points to clinch the top spot. Debanga Kalita, Prachurjya Gayan and Bidisha Sarma finished with five points each to finish second to fourth respectively on the basis of tiebreak scores.

Prasurjya Das (4.5 points) was placed fifth while Shahil Dey, Nitish Das, Kaustav Lahiri, Uddipta Kakati and Abhilekh Mahanta tallied four points to finish sixth to 10th on tiebreak scores.

Rishita Sinha, Jenifa Islam and Anchita Sarma emerged the top three girls at the daylong tournament.

Altogether 44 players participated in the tournament. Senior Assam players Rajib Dhar, Trailokya Nanda and Padma Gogoi attended the prize distribution ceremony.

Special prizes: U-7 — Jayaditya Das, Aayushraj Sharma, Ashleesha Talukdar; U-9 — Nibir Baruah, Anubrat Borthakur, Navya Bajaj; U-11 — Mayukh Dutta, Vishesh Bajaj, Prithwis Das; U-13 — Arnab Kr Pathak, Ritwick Sinha, Sahil Sethi.

In Imphal, ninth seed Y. Shankar today clinched the champion’s title of the E. Kunjeswor Memorial First State-Level Open Chess Tournament, played at Lizard community hall in Wangkhei here.

In seventh and final round, Shankar beat fifteenth seed N. Boboycha to finish with 18 points and a progressive score of 66 for the top title. Third seed N. Bangkim claimed the second spot beating L. Koireng, while fifth seed L. Atembigot finished third beating O. Ningthem. Top seed Rk. Apollosana finished eighth.

MCA cricket: An all-round performance by Rohit Singh helped his team Oscar beat Western Cricket Association by 23 runs in the 1st MCA Plate Tournament at Luwangpokpa cricket stadium today.
