May 11: Maharishi Vidya Mandir will hold an all-faith prayer meeting on Saturday in memory of Udipta Sarma, a Class X student who died on May 5.

The meeting has been convened by a 10-member committee formed by the guardians and parents of the students of the school.

Dipali Chakraborty, the acting principal said the school has granted permission for the prayer meet, which will be held in the school.

Police produced principal M.G. Baruah and vice-principal Sujata Gowami in the court today, before chief judicial magistrate, Kamrup, after being released from the Gauhati Medical College Hospital. Both teachers had to be admitted to the hospital after their health deteriorated on the evening of May 6.

Both teachers were released on bail. They were arrested on May 6 and booked under Section 304 (a) IPC, on charges of causing death by negligence.

A case was registered against them at the Chandmari police station. Udipta’s father, Pradip Sarma, in his FIR, said the school was responsible for his son’s death. “Lack of supervision” on the part of teachers had led to the incident, he had added.

Though the school reopened after three days on May 9, the memory of the tragedy is still fresh.

A section of parents was insisting on a judicial enquiry into the episode, but majority did not support the idea.
