Guwahati: The All Koch Rajbongshi Students' Union (AKRSU) has called a 36-hour Assam bandh from 5am on Wednesday to press the government for various demands.
AKRSU has long been demanding a separate Kamtapur state and Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the around 69 lakh Koch Rajbongshi people in the state.
The union's general secretary, Gokul Barman, said the BJP had promised to fulfil their demands before the 2014 Lok Sabha and 2016 Assembly elections. "But after coming to power, the BJP has forgotten its promises. It will get a fitting reply in the panchayat, Lok Sabha and Assembly elections," he said.
AKRSU has been demanding that the Centre should discuss their demands together. On July 20, it skipped a tripartite meeting in New Delhi on ST status for not including their Kamtapur demand on the agenda. On the same day, it had called a daylong Assam bandh to press for their demands. The students' union has decided to observe Tuesday as the day of betrayal.
The union will also organise a citizens' meet on October 7 in Guwahati to know the opinions of different political parties towards their demands.
The three-member cabinet sub-committee constituted by the state government to look into the ST demand by various communities had met the representatives of AKRSU at Dispur on Monday evening. "Nothing positive came out during the meeting," said AKRSU president Arun Kumar Ray.
