Goalpara: Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi was released from Goalpara district jail around 9.30am on Wednesday sparking jubilation among his supporters.

Akhil lost no time in attacking the BJP-led government in Assam, saying, "There is no democracy in the state and the cases against me are baseless and fabricated."

He said the KMSS would not accept the settlement of illegal foreigners coming to the state after 1971, irrespective of their religion. "We will protest and continue our fight till the end," he said. "The BJP government and the RSS are planning to finish me. My PSO has been withdrawn. If I die even in a truck accident, think of it as the conspiracy of the government."

He termed chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as puppets in the hands of Delhi. Expressing faith in the judiciary, he said, "Not Sarbananda, Justice Ranjan Gogoi is the jatiya nayak of Assam."

He also supported the publication of the draft NRC in the state on December 31 and appealed for peace and co-operation of the people of the state.

Akhil was released on bail by the chief judicial magistrate, Goalpara, Ipsita Borthakur, on Tuesday in a case pending against him at Dudhnoi police station, against a deposit of Rs 10,000. He was freed on Wednesday after the production of a bail order by the Dibrugarh court.

Akhil was arrested in the Dudhnoi case last Saturday, allegedly to block his release from jail after Gauhati High Court quashed the order for his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) on December 21 and the Dibrugarh court granted him bail in a case against him at Moran police station the next day.

Akhil was in jail since September 18 after he was arrested on charges of sedition for making an allegedly provocative speech at a public rally in Moran in Dibrugarh district.

The police on Wednesday arranged for security measures for his release. His supporters were restrained at many places at Krishnai and Moilaputa.

Akhil was named in the FIR after members of KMSS and its students' wing, Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti (SMSS), defaced the name of the Deendayal Upadhyaya Model College at Dudhnoi with black paint after it was inaugurated by Assam education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Akhil reached the Gandhibasti office of the KMSS here at 4pm. "He is fine now," a member said. He also appeared on a TV show on Wednesday evening, berating the BJP and chief minister Sonowal over the citizenship bill issue. He said it was time the non-BJP parties got together.
