Guwahati: Top seed Air India lived up to their reputation to annex the title of the mixed team event inter-zonal championship defeating hosts Assam 3-1 in the finals of the 42nd Inter-state Inter-zonal Junior National Bandminton Championship at Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan indoor stadium here on Wednesday.
In the finals, Ashmita Chaliha clinched the only victory for the home side defeating Purva Barve 21-19, 24-22 in the girls' singles match.
Earlier, Rahul Bhardhvaj B.M. got the better of Orijit Chaliha 21-14, 21-12 in the boys' singles.
In the boys' doubles match, Rahul teamed with Aryamann Tandon to prevail over Abhishek Borah and Rajsekhar Das 21-19, 21-17, while the pair of Prashi Joshi and Mithula U.K. defeated Isharani Baruah and Chimran Kalita duo of Assam 21-19, 21-13 in the girls' doubles.
Inaugurating the tournament formally after the team event finals, Badminton Association of India president and Assam cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the association lauded the Indian shuttlers for their recent achievements in the international arena.
Manipur deputy chief minister Yumnam Joykumar Singh was among a host of dignitariespresent during the opening ceremony.
