Nagaon, Nov. 20: Making light of the AGP?s show of strength in central Assam yesterday, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta?s breakaway group today said the Assembly elections next year would show who enjoyed more support in the area.

?We have information that people were brought in buses from Kamrup and Tezpur for the rally at Nehrubali,? said Pravat Kalita, an AGP (P) leader from Nagaon.

He said a gathering of a few thousands at an AGP rally did not mean that the breakaway group had lost support in the area. ?The voters of the two central districts of Assam ? Morigaon and Nagaon ? still profess loyalty to Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. He is still remains their political icon.?

The AGP rally, attended by party chief Brindaban Goswami and several other central executive leaders, evoked a tepid response.

Less than 10,000 people from the four district committees ? Nagaon, Morigaon, Koliabor and Hojai ? took part in the rally.

Nagaon legislator Girindra Kumar Borua presided over the gathering where all leaders projected Goswami as the chief ministerial candidate. The rally was the first significant political programme of the AGP in central Assam after a gap of two years.

?In January we are going to organise a mass rally in the same field and that will reveal our true strength here,? Kalita said.

Of the 10 Assembly constituencies in Nagaon ? Borhampur, Koliabor, Sadar, Jamunamukh and Lumding ? are represented by non-Congress candidates. Of the four AGP MLAs, Gunin Hazarika has joined Mahanta-led AGP (P).

In Morigaon district, both Laharighat and Morigaon are Congress-dominated. Only the Jagiroad seat is in the hands of Bubul Das, AGP (P) general secretary.

?Mahanta will contest from Nagaon and Borhampur, while Hazarika and Das will contest from Koliabor and Jagiroad seats respectively. We will declare candidates for the other constituencies after holding discussions with the party members,? Kalita said.
