Guwahati, May 29: Unseeded Adrija Biswas today toppled Aakansha Das to cause a major upset in the girls’ under-16 courts in the AITA Championship Series Tennis Tournament under way at Chachal tennis complex here.

Biswas shocked the top seed local girl 7-6 (9), 6-1 in a pre-quarterfinals encounter today.

Third seed Maharashtra girl Rajshree Rathod was awarded a walkover in the absence of Assam girl Gloria Daimary.

Qualifier Assam boys Abhinandan Das and Sahidul Islam also caused upsets in the under-16 boys’ pre-quarterfinals today. Das shocked third seed Suneet S. Somvanshi 6-2, 6-3 to book a berth in the quarter-finals while Islam came back from a set behind to overcome Santosh Acharjya 6-7(8), 6-2, 6-3.

Top seed Assam boy Bijoy Kr Mohanty had a smooth sail into the round of eight, beating Uddish Borpujari 6-0, 6-1.

Aman B. Das, who upset fifth seed Abhilash C. Sahoo in the first round yesterday, was defeated after a gruelling fight against Tathagat T. Gogoi in the pre-quarters. Gogoi won 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Vitsizolie Nagie, who also caused an upset yesterday defeating sixth seed Ankeet Kashyap, today got the better of Ronit Bora to make it to the quarters.

It was a smooth sail for the seeds in the under-12 boys’ pre-quarters today. The only contest was between Debashish Medhi and Sauren Khanna where the former prevailed 0-4, 4-1, 4-1.
