Guwahati, May 25: The Assam Cricket Association (ACA) has decided to “initiate steps” against former first-class cricketer Kamal Das for his alleged involvement in signing of players from Assam with the breakaway Indian Cricket League (ICL).
The governing body meeting of the ACA at Hojai on Saturday considered the affidavit filed by the ICL organisers in a suit against Assam Ranji skipper Arlen Konwar in Bombay High Court. Das had been referred to in the suit as being closely associated with the signing of the player. The ICL organisers filed the suit against Konwar after he pulled out of the contract a week later.
The governing body resolved that the matter be forwarded to the ACA disciplinary committee for recommendation of disciplinary action against Das accusing him of being involved in an activity deemed detrimental towards the interest of the state, ACA secretary Bikash Baruah said in a statement issued today. Das could not be contacted for further comments regarding the declaration.
Assam had sorely missed the services of five key players — Abu Naschim Ahmed, Sujoy Tarafdar, Parvez Aziz, Pritam Das and Syed Zakaria Zuffri — during the last season after the players switched loyalty to the ICL last year.
Das had also been associated with the ACA as a coach and a selector for a long time. He was also the chief coach of the Assam Cricket Academy before it was revamped in 2006.
Das was replaced by former first class player Rajesh Borah as the chief coach after the revamp.
