Kokrajhar, April 22: After repeatedly knocking on Dispur’s door for improvement of Bodo-medium institutions, the Bodo Sahitya Sabha and the All Bodo Students’ Union (Absu) urged the Bodoland Territorial Council once again to take up the issue with the government.
During a meeting held yesterday at the BTC guesthouse in Guwahati’s Khanapara area, the students’ union and the literary organisation discussed various issues threadbare with BTC deputy chief Kampha Borgoyari, BTC executive member in-charge of education Emmanuel Mushahary, Assam public health engineering minister Rihon Daimary and parliamentary secretary Parameshwar Brahma.
The Bodo Sahitya Sabha and Absu have been demanding the creation of a separate directorate for Bodo-medium educational institutions with separate budget and provincialisation of all Bodo-medium lower primary schools, middle English and high schools in the state.
The organisations are also demanding the establishment of medical, engineering, veterinary colleges, the appointment of Bodo lecturers and teachers for the Bodo departments in Dibrugarh and Silchar University and in higher secondary schools.
The organisations said Bodo-medium students are suffering because of the lack of adequate number of teachers and delay in receipt of textbooks and urged the BTC authorities to take up the matter with the state government.
They also asked the council to put pressure on the Assam government to solve the Bodo education problem in areas outside its jurisdiction.
Absu has set April 30 as the deadline for Dispur to initiate steps to improve the condition of Bodo-medium schools in the state.
It has threatened to launch a rigorous agitation if their 26 charter of demands is not met by that time.
The organisations had earlier accused the state government of turning a deaf ear to their appeals.
