Bongaigaon, March 4: Police rescued Ranjit Dutta, 40, a Kokrajhar-based trader, from the Koilamoila area in Chirang district this evening.

Four motorcycle-borne unidentified men had abducted Dutta on February 21 near his residence at Bhabanipur in Kokrajhar. The police registered a case (no. 109/2017) under Section 365 (abduction) of the IPC following an FIR lodged at the Kokrajhar police station by his elder brother Pradeep the day after the abduction.

The Duttas, however, did not get any ransom call, Pradeep said.

After the arrest of three persons in this connection, the police obtained some clues which led them to the location. Finally, with the help of Chirang police, they rescued Dutta around 6pm from Koilamoila, around 50km, from Kokrajhar town.

However, the police failed to nab the abductors who fled to a forest in the Koilamoila area. Anurag Agarwal, the inspector-general of police (BTAD), while addressing a news conference this evening, ruled out involvement of any militant group in the abduction.
