Jorhat, Nov. 4: Police today arrested four persons in connection with two ATM cash thefts in the past few days in Upper Assam's Jorhat district.
Prasanta Bhuyan, the person believed to be the mastermind behind the October 29 night robbery case (Rs 1.69 crore) under Teok police station, was arrested today after he was picked up from a house on the western outskirts here last night.
The police recovered Rs 1.11 crore from Bhuyan's residence at Choladhara here on October 31. He was not present in the house then.
Bhuyan, who was produced in the court of the chief judicial magistrate (Jorhat), was remanded in three days' police custody by the acting chief judicial magistrate - sub-divisional judicial magistrate (Sadar) - Nayanjyoti Sarmah.
The accused has been booked under Sections 395, 120B, 323 IPC and Sections 25 (1A) and 27 of the Arms Act in Teok police station. With Bhuyan's arrest, the number of persons arrested in the case has risen to nine.
On October 29, Rs 1.64 crore was "looted" from a cash van under Teok police station. The police arrested five employees of the private firm who were carrying the money for the incident and another three were arrested yesterday.
The police also arrested the private security guards deployed at the ATM of Allahabad Bank's Dhekorgorah branch on the outskirts here for their alleged involvement in breaking of the cash vault and stealing the money on Monday night. Biplab Bora, Ranjit Bordoloi and Dipak Bora, who were detained by Pulibor police yesterday, were sent to three days' police remand by the same court.
Jorhat superintendent of police Amanjeet Kaur said investigation was on in both the cases and they were working on several leads, which could not be disclosed now as it may hamper the probe.
