Tezpur, Aug. 24: The 24-hour Sonitpur district bandh called by several Adivasi organisations, in protest against the recent death of a person in army custody, affected Gohpur, Biswanath Chariali and Naduar area in the district.

A Birsa Commando Force militant, Sonagadi Nag, 27, died in Halem army camp in the district on August 18. He was picked up by the army the previous day from his home in Naya Ghogra tea estate.

While the army attributed his death to "chest pain and uneasiness", Nag's family members said he died because of army "atrocity". Defence spokesperson Lt Col Suneet Newton said an inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

Nilutpal Ravidas, Gohpur sub-divisional secretary of Assam Tea Tribes Students' Association, told The Telegraph that they supported the bandh because the Assam government and police did not take any action against the guilty army personnel.

Gohpur police registered a case based on an FIR by Nag's family members.
