CASE FILE

We are a tenant family staying at 49/5/H-173, Karl Marx Sarani, Calcutta 700023 (new address). Every month, our landlady gives us a rent receipt which has the old address printed on it — 49/5 Circular Garden Reach Road, Calcutta 700023. We have pointed this out to our landlady who still continues to give us the old printed receipts. She explained that she has not yet received stocks with the new address printed. Is this legal? What can we do now?

You need not worry about this because this is not a problem at all. You are continuing with your rights as a tenant in the same portion for which you are paying monthly rent against a receipt. The receipt is a record of the fact that the landlady is accepting rent for the portion that you have occupied even before the change of address. However, if you so desire you may send her a letter requesting for change of address on the receipt and keep a record of that. You may also pay rent by a cheque with a forwarding letter stating therein the new address and obtain a receipt for the same.
