Q: I have a bachelors in hospital management and an MBA in marketing. I am working with a private bank as an assistant manager. How can I get jobs in marketing or hospital management? Are there opportunities in hospital management outside Calcutta?
Soumya Dasgupta
A: I think you are missing out on a golden opportunity of utilising your education. Hospital management is an upcoming field and all hospitals would be eager to hire a person with a degree in it. I think you should do research on all the hospitals and apply wherever there is a vacancy.
Q: I am 28 years old with an MBA in marketing. What kind of jobs could I get?
Javed Akhtar
A: You can get jobs in sales and marketing. You have to decide which industry you would like to work for and be able to contribute your maximum. For example, you might be interested to work in a telecom company rather than a bank or an insurance organisation..
Q: I am 32 years old and have done BE in computer science and engineering. I was a part-time computer teacher, in Kendriya Vidyalaya for five years. I did a short-term course in software testing. I want to work in a private company. But as I have a nine-year gap, I got rejected. What should I do?
Monalisa Das
A: It would be really difficult for you to get into the corporate sector after a nine-year hiatus. I think you can either teach or work as a freelancer for sometime. This would build up your confidence and also give you the breathing time to look for a corporate job.
Q: I am 39 years old and hold an MBA in information systems. I also have a diploma in electronics and worked as an assistant engineer in Delhi. After returning to Calcutta I could not get a similar job so I shifted to HR and administration. I have eight-year experience in various fields. What should I do?
Apala Chatterjee
A: Since you have gained experience in several fields, you would be in a better situation to judge which job you find most interesting and satisfying. But to go higher up in the career ladder, you need educational qualification in the subject area, apart from experience. So, if you choose HR as an option, you need to do a diploma / correspondence course in the subject.
Q: I have a BSc in bioscience and an MBA in HR. I want to be a dietician. What course can I do and from where?
Ayesha Chakravarty
A: To be a dietician, you could opt for a PG diploma from the All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health under Calcutta University. There are several institutes which offer courses in the subject such as Mumbai University, Mumbai, Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education For Women, Coimbatore, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amristar, National Institute Of Nutrition, Hyderabad, Osmania University, Hyderabad, SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, Delhi University, New Delhi, Madras University, Chennai.
Q: I have done MA in political science. I am doing company secretaryship after which I plan to do an MBA (HR). Am I on the right path?
Rahamatullah Kazi
A: Your career is currently moving in multiple directions. A masters in political science would enable you to pursue a career in academics or media. A company secretaryship would mean that you work as a company secretary in any of the corporate houses. If you do an MBA in HR, it would lead you to another path. Decide what you want to be. Otherwise, you would be acquiring diverse educational qualifications which might not add value to your job profile.
Q: I am 26 years old and working in a garment manufacturing company. I want to pursue textile design. Can you suggest me institutes which hold classes on Sundays?
Gopal Hari
A: No course is taught on a Sunday. If you are interested in textile design, you could either opt for a full-time degree from NID, NIFT and other such institutes or go for short-term courses. If time is a constraint, you could try and learn on-the-job if the opportunity is provided to you.
Q: I am doing graduation in mass communication and preparing for PG in print journalism. If I want to work in Canada what qualifications do I need?
Cynthia Ranjeeta
A: You need a degree from Canada or a North American state. Since you are studying mass communication and journalism here, it would be necessary for you to do a bridge course from a Canadian University and then apply for jobs there. If you want to apply to a North American University, you would have to take a GRE here before applying.
