Q: Should I do BBA or BCom after Plus Two? I am confused. What are the prospects after completing BBA?
Arijit Das
A: BCom is a basic degree and you can choose various fields after graduation. BBA is a specialised field and the choices after graduation are limited. If you want to do BBA, then the next step would be to pursue MBA. If you do BCom, you can do MBA or study any accountancy-related subject. If you are sure that you would like to do MBA after graduation then you can opt for BBA. It will prepare you better for an MBA degree.
Q: I am studying BCom. I want to work abroad after this. What should I do?
Rajat Dutta Gupta
A: Only a BCom degree would not take you far in any organisation abroad. You should first decide which country you would like to go to and then take up some vocational course which is in demand there. If you want to stick with commerce, you can take a look at IFRS and GAAP accounting standards, which are applicable abroad.
Q: I am a computer science graduate working as a computer operator at a private firm. I want to do NCFM courses on stock markets. What are the prospects and how do I prepare myself?
Souvik Chatterjee
A: You are a computer science graduate and have experience in that field, but still you want to take up a very different subject. Think it over carefully. NCFM has several modules for the stock markets. By completing any of them, you can be a stock broker or work for a financial services organisation. The tests are similar to other competitive exams with questions on numerical ability, logical reasoning, statistics and English.
Q: I am 22 years old and am pursuing MCA from Ignou. I completed BCA from Ignou with 60 per cent. I have three years of corporate experience. Now I teach at a computer institute. I want to do a Sun Java certification sometime. Should I pursue an MBA after MCA?
Name witheld
A: Age is on your side, you can still pursue an MBA. Then why are you thinking of doing MCA and Sun Java certification? I think you should have a re-look at your career aspirations and interest and then decide if you want to do an MBA or not.
Q: I am a 26-year-old arts graduate working in HDFC as a sales officer. I am interested in banking operations and not sales. What should I do?
Uttam Gupta
A: I think you should talk to your HR department and ask them for a short stint in the operations department to find out your suitability and see if a shift could be made possible for you. If that is not possible, then you can look for a job in the operations department of another bank. You might have to forego your experience in sales and start afresh if the organisation so demands. I think that is a sacrifice worth making because if operations is what you really like then you would perform better there.
Q: I am a 30-year-old medical representative. I stammer a little. I have an MBA in marketing and HR from the Sikkim Manipal University. Should I change my domain to HR?
A.K. Biswas
A: In HR or marketing you have to talk to people. The only difference is that in HR these would be people within the organisation. I think you could seek a move to HR if you feel confident that you can do the job allotted to you.
Q: I am 33 years old and have been working as a personal assistant for the past five years. I already have an MBA in marketing. Could you suggest some other course that might be of help in future?
Raneesh Borkotoky
A: It is very difficult to suggest a course unless I know what is the “future” you are looking at. Why are you working as a personal assistant if you have an MBA degree? I think the five years you have given to the organisation would be of no use to your career. In our eagerness to get a job we often forget what is our “interest” and get stuck in a job which we do not like.
Q: I did postgraduation in English and want to work in an English news channel. What posts can I apply for? I have no experience. Also, can I be a copy editor in a newspaper?
Sangeeta Chatterjee
A: News channels and newspapers always look for talented people. Since you do not have any experience, you would have to start as a fresher. Apart from reporting, in a news channel you can be a newscaster, production assistant, news researcher or copy editor. In print, you can be a copy editor or a features writer.
