Jamshedpur, April 29: XLRI will now train teachers to adapt to the changing needs of the students through an online PG certificate course in applied educational leadership and management.
The one-year course conceived by the Centre for Research, Training, Education and Leadership (CeRTEL) - a wing of XLRI - in collaboration with Fordham University, USA, was launched at the "Teach India, Reach India: National Colloquium on School Education held on Saturday on the campus of the premier B-school in Jamshedpur. The course aims to enhance the effectiveness of teachers by improving their support structures.
CeRTEL chairman Francis Peter said, "Majority of the principals take up the role of administrators without any formal leadership and managerial training. They often only have their teaching diploma and develop a workable model to run their institutions through hands-on experiences. In response to the request of the principals, we have launched this programme for school teachers who are going to take up leadership roles."
"The programme, costing nearly Rs 1.75 lakh, has a curriculum that includes job-embedded activities, collegial discussions and project work. It is designed to equip participants with practical educational leadership skills. Spread across 12 months, the curriculum is divided into four modules and 15 courses out of which 10 will be delivered online and the rest in workshop mode on the XLRI campus. Initially, 50 teachers will be trained," the CeRTEL chairman said.
The training will be provided in a blended format comprising lectures, workshops and competence building projects supervised by the experienced faculty of XLRI, Fordham University and other reputed institutions.
In her inaugural address at the national colloquium, Ruchi Narendran, managing trustee of Jusco education office, stressed the need for teachers and educationists to be able to adapt to the changing scenario.
"There is a need to change our mode of studies suiting different cultures along with an emphasis on moral values. There is also a need for better interpretation of available data and adopt teaching modes such as Skype and other digital mediums," she said.
Around 48 principals and educationists from across the country participated in the conference where senior XLRI faculty presented a research paper on "Status of School Education Today".
Francis Peter said CeRTEL would start a session from May to enhance the skills of English teachers. From July, it will start providing CDs on maths and science under the "Class in a Box" programme. The CDs will be shown at schools in rural areas of Seraikela-Kharsawan and West Singhbhum.
