Jamshedpur, Sept. 3: The students’ election revival process is expected to gather momentum after the vice-chancellor of Ranchi University notifies the statute of the polls.

Dean of students’ welfare (DSW) Victor Tigga told The Telegraph that the mandatory statute, which has to be followed during the elections, is complete and will be presented to the vice-chancellor within a couple of days for necessary notification to the constituent colleges.

Elaborating on the contents of the 10-page statute, Tigga said, “There will be no age bar for students to contest the union polls. One just needs to be a bonafide student of the university with a clean image.”

Tigga, who has also been appointed the election officer, said minor modifications have been made in the statute, which was last implemented in the 1982 students’ polls.

For example, the membership fee for college unions is likely to be increased from Rs 2 to Rs 10. However, he added that a final decision would be taken in consultation with the vice-chancellor. The statute includes details on the format of the elections, how the electoral rolls in have to be prepared and the eligibility criteria. Tigga said principals of the constituent colleges would have to select the class representatives. Two representatives each from Parts I-III (bachelor’s degree) of the three different streams would be elected as office-bearers of the students’ union of a particular college. There would be a separate union for postgraduate students in the respective colleges, he added.

According to Tigga, the office-bearers of both the undergraduate and postgraduate classes would elect representatives for an apex body at the college level. It will be called the College Central Body.

Five members would be elected to the senate. Besides, the vice-chancellor will nominate another member, who is good in either sports or academics at the university level.

The vice-chancellor had set a deadline of October 28 for the constitution of the Senate.

Tigga said the process of preparing the electoral lists for the students’ elections would commence after the vice-chancellor notified the statute.

Officials of Ranchi University said the process of forming the electoral rolls for the teachers’ union election has started.

Senior academic council member S.S. Razi, who is also the principal of Jamshedpur Workers’ College, said a university employee today collected teachers’ lists colleges in the city.
