Ranchi, Feb. 14: St Xavier's College made extra security arrangements today to prevent any untoward incident on the campus during an ongoing fest that coincided with Valentine's Day.
Sixty students of the cradle, which witnessed the gruesome murder of an examinee from another college by her estranged lover in 2011, turned security guards for a day to keep outsiders from entering the campus. This apart, the college deployed five security guards in addition to the five existing ones.
'During an event like fest, the crowd naturally swells. On top of that, today is Valentine's Day. There are many youths who are trying to enter the college,' said a third-year student Saurabh Kumar, dressed in black uniform and holding a baton near the entrance.
Kamal Bose, in-charge of the college fest, said they didn't want outsiders to enter the campus, as on the pretext of watching events like rock show, they might misbehave with the girl students.
'We want to avoid incidents like the murder of Kushboo Kumari (a student of Ram Manohar Lohia College who was decapitated by Bijendra Prasad outside her intermediate exam venue at the college on April 27, 2011). There are many eve-teasers outside.'
A few girls, celebrating Valentine's Day by presenting roses to each other, agreed. 'We are in a jubilant mood and don't want to be disturbed by outsiders,' said Sona Kumari, a first-year commerce.
Blood camp
Members of Hindu Yuva Vahini, a Sangh parivar outfit that is strictly against occasions like Valentine's Day, held a blood donation camp at Tharpakhana after taking out a procession from Jaipal Singh Stadium to remember freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru. The idea was to 'educate' the young about India's rich history so that they did not blindly ape the west.
