Thousands of Jamshedpureans bound for Tatanagar station can use the new railway underpass from Saturday, ending, in all likelihood, long snarls on Jugsalai-Station Road that caused many to miss their trains or race to the platform huffing and puffing.

"The Rs 6-crore railway under-bridge or underpass will be thrown open to the public on Saturday right after inauguration," senior divisional commercial manager of Chakradharpur railway division Satyam Prakash told The Telegraph. "The Chakradharpur railway division ready to commission the underpass project near Tata Pigments on Jusalai-Station Road."

From Saturday, people from places like Bistupur, Circuit House Area, Kadma, Sonari and other nearby areas can use the new underpass to reach the railway station. People from Tatanagar station as well as from Jugsalai and Bagbera, who are coming towards the city will continue to use the old underpass. This two-way segregation is expected to do away with traffic jams completely.

A Tatanagar official on Friday said work for the underpass was satisfactorily completed and the infrastructure inspected. "Senior railway authorities from Chakradharpur have inspected the new underpass," deputy station superintendent at Tatanagar railway station Malay Mallick said.

An employee of Megotia Constructions Private Limited, the firm executing the project, said the work of pushing the box girders, which will support the infrastructure, had been completed last month. "Two box girders have been installed at the place of the new underpass that will be much stronger compared to the existing railway under bridge. The new underpass is also taller than the existing one," he said.

Expected at the high-profile inauguration are parliamentary affairs and food and civil supplies minister Sarayu Roy, Jamshedpur MP Bidyut Baran Mahto, Rajya Sabha MP Pradeep Kumar Balmuchu, MLAs Menaka Sardar of Potka and Ramchandra Sahis of Jugsalai and divisional railway manager of Chakradharpur Rajendra Prasad.

Railway officials admitted that the new underpass, which started being constructed in 2014, had been a long-pending demand of commuters. "With one underpass previously, traffic jams were an everyday affair. The situation was nightmarish during monsoon due to waterlogging, Now, however, the problem should be overcome to a very large extent, if not completely," said an official of railway's commercial department.
