Realty dreams dashed? The CID is ready to listen and read.
In a public notification in newspapers on Sunday, Jharkhand’s crime investigation department floated special helpline numbers and e-mail IDs, inviting documented complaints from people who have been cheated by fraud Ranchi-based real estate developer Sanjeevani Buildcon Private Limited and its sister firms.
CID IG Anurag Gupta, who is heading a special probe into the Sanjeevani Buildcon scam, said people willing to voice their grievances should have provide valid documents of their claims.
“This will help us in two ways. First, we will be able to sieve fake complainants. Second, having valid documents will strengthen the overall case and help us assess the magnitude of the scam,” the IG said.
He added that while the number of walk-in complainants at the CID office in Doranda was burgeoning, the helplines too were receiving good — and hence alarming — response.
“Over 100 people walked in with their grouses on Saturday alone, while the phones haven’t stopped ringing since Sunday morning. We must have received some 35 calls. All I can say is that the scam is big. We are currently grouping victims project-wise. Police have been asked to register FIRs project-wise too,” Gupta said.
Speaking on the nature of fraud, he added that mutation papers were false, registration papers bore forged government seals and the company proprietor got registration done based on fake identity proof and land records.
The CID IG stressed that the government and police were seriously pursuing the scam because it involves middle class victims.
“If anyone can give us even the smallest clue on people wanted in connection with the scam, it will be of great help. The identity of informers will be protected,” he said, adding that in a day or two they would come up with a dedicated team to monitor calls.
