Jamshedpur, Aug. 7: Jharkhand Peoples’ Party (JPP) demanded a tripartite agreement between the Union, state and representatives of those involved in the Jharkhand Movement along the lines of the Assam, Bodo and Mizo accord.

Party president and former legislator, Surya Singh Besra said confusion exists due to absence of any agreement between the three parties. “It started with revival of Chirudih case by the Arjun Munda government,” he said.

A tripartite agreement between the Mizos, Union and the state government during the formation of Mizoram resulted in withdrawal of all cases against those involved in the movement for formation of the state, said Besra.

“Laldenga, the Mizo leader who spearheaded anti-government activities and rebellion and was proclaimed a terrorist, became the first chief minister of Mizoram after its formation in the year 1986, because of the agreement,” said Besra. “On the other hand, Shibu Soren and other freedom fighters, who fought for the formation of Jharkhand, are now being hounded after the formation of the state because they are opposing the wrong decisions of the government,” he added.

The former legislator said the party may also launch a massive agitation against the state government if it continues to harass those involved in the Jharkhand Movement. “The state government should withdraw all cases against those involved in the Jharkhand Movement,” he added.

According to sources, more than 10,000 people are involved in cases related to Jharkhand’s struggle for statehood. The party would demand government compensation for the kin of those who died in the Jharkhand struggle and rehabilitation for families whose houses were destroyed when the court issued property attachment orders, said Besra.
