Ranchi, Dec. 9: Residents of Deoghar will soon get a foolproof drainage system in the holy city.
They will not be required to shut their noses while walking on the roads stinking with overflowing drain water.
Jharkhand High Court today directed the Deoghar deputy commissioner to ensure proper drainage system in the area.
The division bench of Chief Justice P.K.I. Balasubramanyan and Justice Tapen Sen has given eight weeks to complete the work.
The direction was given while hearing a contempt petition filed by a resident of Deoghar, Jai Kumar, this afternoon.
The petition was filed when the Deoghar district administration failed to construct new drainage and remove encroachment from despite the court order.
The court, in June, 2002, had directed the Deoghar district administration for the same disposing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Kumar. It had given six weeks time to complete the work.
The work could not be completed and Kumar moved the court with his contempt petition.
The case was listed in the division bench of Chief Justice Balasubramanyan and Justice Sen. The court admitting the petition issued notice to the urban development secretary.
The secretary, filing an affidavit before the court, did not accept his responsibility for the constructing drain. He held Deoghar Municipal Corporation and deputy commissioner responsible for the same. It was said that secretariat had sanctioned the funds for the construction of drain in the religious city.
The court after going through the affidavit filed by the secretary and hearing the argument of petitioner’s advocate, directed the Deoghar deputy commissioner to comply with the court order while disposing PIL in June last year within eight weeks.
