Jamshedpur: A Sonari gang leader and his aide, allegedly involved in the murder of rival gang's Abhay Giri, 18, last week, were nabbed on Monday.

While 30-year-old Vikas Kumar Singh alias Hete led the Hete gang, Sujeet Kumar Gorai, 24, was his aide. Both the residents of Bilash Bustee in Nirmal Nagar, Sonari, after their arrest, divulged details that helped the police recover a 7.65mm pistol, two live cartridges and a scooter used in the Abhay murder.

East Singhbhum SSP Anoop Birtharay said in all six criminals were involved in the fatal gunshot attack on Abhay, who belonged to the rival Ravi Das gang, near Kagalnagar petrol pump in Sonari on May 24 morning. "We are trying to arrest the remaining four accused who have fled the city," the SSP told the media.

Abhay had been a target since four months ago when he had severely assaulted one of Hete's men, the SSP said.

The SSP added that Hete had been riding a bike with two other pillion riders. The shooter, whose name was not disclosed for the purposes of the probe, was riding pillion on Gorai's scooter, which had a second pillion-rider.

"We arrested Hete from Domuhani whereas Gorai was arrested from his house at Bilash Bustee. After the two were arrested we recovered the pistol which they had kept hidden in a bush and the scooter from another slum, both in Sonari. The scooter was a stolen one," the SSP said.

Hete had been to jail more than once, the latest being 2016, but Gorai did not have a criminal record.

The SSP said both the Hete and Ravi Das gangs had some 15 members each. "Gangs don't commit crimes such as snatching or extortion, but are bloodthirsty towards each other due to old enmities. We fear the remaining members of each gang may start bloody clashes again. We have, therefore, intensified patrolling in the slums of Sonari," he said.
