Hazaribagh, Jan. 13: A medical college under Vinoba Bhave University (VBU) may soon be a reality, as the authorities are keen on arranging 30 acres for the purpose after a green signal from the state health department.
According to VBU officials, health department officials told vice chancellor R.N. Bhagat during a meeting last Monday that 30 acres would be needed for the project. He was asked to look for the required land in Hazaribagh.
Bhagat said the university was in search of land for a medical college. He added that 20 acres were lying vacant, adjacent to the VBU headquarters in Sindoor.
The vice chancellor pointed out that the plot had been earlier offered to the income tax department to open a regional training institute. But the institute was eventually set up in Nagpur.
Bhagat also said that Hazaribagh sadar hospital possessed 10 acres that could be utilised for the medical college project.
The plot of the hospital, 5km from the varsity campus, along with the 20 acres in Sindoor could fulfil the 30-acre criterion set by the health officials, Bhagat reasoned.
State health secretary K. Vidyasagar also discussed the issue with Hazaribagh deputy commissioner Manish Ranjan last week. Rao expressed his desire to utilise the 20 acres for setting up the medical college.
Ranjan told The Telegraph that a state-of-the-art medical college was in the pipeline, confirming that he had a talk with Rao on the matter.
He pointed out that the varsity also needed a no-objection certificate from the state income tax department before taking over the 20 acres.
“Setting up of a medical college will be a boon for this place, as patients will not have to rush to other places for better treatment. I will look into clear land-related hurdles so that the project becomes a reality,” he added.
VBU has been on the lookout of land since 2008 for opening a medical college in Hazaribagh.
The varsity had eyed plots in Padma and Pinjrapole areas earlier, but the plan failed to move ahead.
