Dhanbad, July 19: Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) will shut down some of its power generation units, including one each at Bokaro and Chandrapura thermal power stations, soon.

The decision is the result of a host of factors, including surplus power generation and stringent environmental norms. Most of the units have also completed 25 years of operations.

Unit 3 of both Bokaro and Chandrapura thermal power stations, having a capacity of 210MW and 130MW, respectively, will be shut down in a phased manned by November.

Incidentally, units 1 and 2 of Bokaro Thermal Power Station with a capacity of 210MW each have already been shut down earlier this year.

According to the company, the shutdowns would not affect power supply to consumers such as Coal India, Steel Authority of India Ltd and Indian Railway besides states such as Jharkhand, Bengal, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab.

Addressing the media at Maithon today, DVC chairman Andrew WK Langstieh said the increasing operational cost of the units was putting the company's finances under strain.

"Moreover, the units would not have been able to comply with the stringent environment norms with regard to sulphur oxide, nitrogen oxide and particulate emission to be introduced from January 1, 2018," he said, adding several new units based on latest technology had been set up at Koderma, Chandrapura, Raghunathpur and Andal.

Earlier today, in a meeting with DVC officials, Langstieh said the company was in good shape as power generation had increased 22 per cent in the last three years.

He also highlighted DVC's achievements in power supply, revenue collection and Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project funded by the World Bank.
