Jamshedpur, Aug. 9: If things go according to the plans of the Jharkhand Cycling Association (JCA), a Lance Armstrong could well be expected to pedal out from here.
The state cycling body has initiated efforts to bring inter-school cycling activities under its fold and thereby try and enhance the stature of the sport.
JCA has planned to add inter-school cycling competition to the cycling meet, to be held in the city on September 9 and 10. State cycling association secretary Satbir Singh confirmed plans to this effect.
The inter-school cycling event in the city is organised by the schools. But, as these institutions have limited resources at their disposal the event often lacks the much-needed competitiveness. Whereas, the event would get better visibility and acceptance once it comes under the fold of the association, experts opined.
Singh, a former cyclist, said they would be writing to schools shortly to inform them about the cycling meet. ?We need the support of the city-based schools,? informed the secretary.
Senior JCA functionaries added that there was a need to popularise cycling in the city and the schools should take the initiative.
?It is a popular sport in other parts of the country,? they pointed out and added that, in nationals, more rural youths, than urban, are included.
The state cycling squad can become better if such events are streamlined, said cycling experts and added that such an effort would help them spot and train talented cyclists.
