Amol V. Homkar, East Singhbhum SSP, On Twin Aims Of Crime Prevention And Detection 10 Questions As Told To Kumud Jenamani AS TOLD TO KUMUD JENAMANI Published 16.12.13, 12:00 AM

TT: How do you rate Jamshedpur’s prevailing law and order situation?

Homkar: I won’t say good or bad. I’ll only say there is much scope for improvement

What is your focus?

My first priority is making the city free of organised crime. I also want people, especially women, to move around in any part of the city without fear of assault

But snatching and thefts are on the rise.

We have intensified random checks at strategic points and night patrol. I hope citizens see the result within a month

Women and girls don’t feel confident moving around at night.

As I said earlier, there is scope for improvement. My team is willing to walk the extra mile

Is prevention better than detection?

Both prevention and detection can curb crime. Some, such as those committed due to personal enmity, can’t be prevented. But if we detect them swiftly, we can broadly check the trend. Snatching, loot, theft and so on can be prevented with intensified patrol

What about keeping tabs on criminals, terrorists and militants?

We have decided to start checking every hotel and lodge in and around the city to ensure guests have bona fide credentials. We are beefing up arms checks

Are you satisfied with the city’s traffic policing?

Jamshedpur’s vehicles are growing exponentially but roads remain the same. The only solution is working harder to streamline traffic. We are mulling drastic changes

Do you think a traffic advisory committee is needed?

I gather the traffic advisory committee, which once existed, is now defunct. I’d like to revive it so that people take part in making decisions to ease clogged roads

How will you make police people-friendly?

I believe in bringing people closer to the police for a safer society. We are giving public-police coordination committee a makeover. In the past, few persons from a specific community were involved. Now, we have decided to rope in people from all communities and strata

Finally, what is your message for citizens?

I would like to ask all law-abiding residents to look at the police as their friend. I am available on my cellphone at 9431706480
