Jamshedpur, Feb. 16: A 14-year-old boy, driving to school in a Maruti, knocked down a woman on Dimna Road in the Olidih police station area of Mango this afternoon.

Abhitez Kumar, a Class VII student of RVS Academy, was arrested and the vehicle (JH05-D-2594) seized.

The mishap occurred around 12.30pm. The victim, identified as Mitarani Kohli, a resident of Moon City, was on her way to fetch her daughter from a nearby kindergarten school. The teen, who was allegedly speeding down the road, hit her while she was walking past Dimna Road. The car then swerved and rammed into a concrete pole.

Kohli sustained injuries on her head, chest and right leg. She was rushed to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital. But as her condition was serious, the doctors on emergency duty referred her to the Tata Main Hospital.

Abhitez was also taken to the Government Medical College Hospital as he sustained head injuries in the accident. After treatment the MGM Hospital camp police took him into custody.

A resident of Rajendra Nagar in Mango, Abhitez would drive to school almost every day, said sources. Bharat Singh, the secretary of RVS Academy said the school had given over by 10.30am on Monday. “The school management has strictly prohibited under-age driving. No student is permitted to come to school driving either a two-wheeler or a four-wheeler. Plus Two students are allowed to ride vehicles without gear,” said the secretary.

Sub-inspector Rajesh Kumar Sinha of Olidih police station, who took the boy into custody, said: “We are simply following the rules. We are prosecuting the accused for driving without a licence.”

On Sunday morning, a similar accident had taken place at Baroda Ghaat in Bagbera where a woman died on the spot under the killer wheels of a young boy’s car.

Deputy superintendent of police (traffic) Aman Kongari said underage driving is prohibited and claimed that the traffic police conduct regular drives to check the same.

“Parents should take initiative to prevent their children from driving cars and bikes so that such mishaps could be checked,” the DSP said.
