Ranchi: A three-month-old healthy baby boy was found abandoned in a bag on the stairs of a government quarters at Chhapan Set locality under Doranda thana area here on Thursday.

Ranchi district Child Welfare Committee (CWC), which took the boy under its protective custody, has named him Krishna Kanhaiya.

"The boy, who was taken to a government hospital for a health check-up, was found fit. We have admitted him to Ka-runa shelter at Morabadi. I have minutely observed the baby's behaviour. He looks like a pampered child with his body thoroughly massaged with oil and kajal on his eyes. I don't know why his parents deserted him," said CWC member Tanushree Sarkar.

The baby was first seen by Munni and Anu, two sisters who live in one of the quarters of this G-plus one building.

Their father Vishwanath Oraon, a driver with Jharkhand Anti-Corruption Bureau, said his daughters noticed the baby inside a bag when they returned home around 5am after morning walk.

"Both my daughters leave home around 4am for morning walk. When they returned, they saw a bag kept on the staircase of the building. They informed me about it and I got in touch with Doranda thana," said Oraon.

Oraon said God saved the baby as he could have been killed by stray dogs.

"Stray dogs are a major problem in the locality and our quarters is worst affected. At night, dozens of strays stay on the campus. But surprisingly, there wasn't a single dog since yesterday night. Whoever deserted the baby here deliberately chose this place to ensure that the baby remains safe," said Oraon.

Asked about the legal fate of the baby, Sarkar said abandoned children are kept for adoption. "But the process can start after 60 days. During this period, CWC will wait for the boy's biological parents to come forward if there is a change in their hearts," she said.
