Mumbai, Feb. 15: The Maharashtra government today denied the allegation of Ajmal Kasab that he was not given a fair trial and justified the death sentence awarded to him.
Former solicitor- general Gopal Subramaniam, appearing for the state, contended that Kasab was never tortured or maltreated and there had been no violation of his constitutional rights.
New Delhi (PTI): Delhi High Court has refused to initiate contempt proceedings against the IPS officer who made a constable crawl in a court complex for not saluting him. The court, however, termed the act “inhuman” and said no officer should resort to punishing their subordinates in public.
Mumbai: Amitabh Bachchan underwent further tests at Seven Hills Hospital, four days after his abdominal surgery. “The pain remains, … more investigations, CT scans, X-rays, still in Hospital..uggh!” he tweeted on Wednesday.
Udhagamandalam (PTI): A Class X student from Udhagamandalam in Tamil Nadu has been arrested for breaking into a shop and stealing cellphones and recharge coupons worth Rs 7,500. Suresh Kumar was held after his friends went to the same shop-owner to sell the coupons at discounted rates, which he identified with the stolen ones.
New Delhi (PTI): Delhi High Court has asked the Centre and the state government to respond to a plea that alleged sexual assault and harassment of children at an orphanage here. The court also issued notice to Arya Anathalaya, a children’s home in Daryaganj. The replies have to be submitted in three weeks.
Chennai (PTI): Theatres in Tamil Nadu will cancel all screenings on February 23 to protest the Centre’s move to levy a 10.3 per cent service tax on the cinema industry. The Film Federation of India has proposed a nationwide shutdown.
