Mumbai, Nov. 19: Peter Mukerjea, the former television executive who hit the headlines after his wife was accused of murdering her daughter Sheena Bora, was arrested today by the CBI.

Peter has been charged under IPC sections 120b (criminal conspiracy) and 201 (destruction of evidence).

Sources said the statements of two of the accused - Sheena's mother Indrani Mukerjea and the family driver Shyamvar Rai - were instrumental in Peter's arrest.

"Critical information about Peter came from none other than his wife Indrani," said a CBI source. Other sources said that last month Peter had gone to Byculla women's jail to meet Indrani, who is in judicial custody, and their conversation was not congenial.

"Driver Rai's four-hour statement recorded before a magistrate was the nail in Peter's coffin. The driver said Peter knew that Sheena was missing. In the confession, which is admissible in court, the driver said he had often heard Indrani discussing the issue with Peter. The legal validation for the arrest came from the driver's statement," a CBI official said.

Sheena was allegedly murdered by her mother, Indrani's former husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Rai in April 2012 but the crime came to light only this year. The CBI, which took over the case from Mumbai police, filed a 1,000-page chargesheet today.

"Peter's statement was contradictory on financial dealings. He was grilled constantly and there were repeated inconsistencies. One of them was his claim about funding a European holiday for Sheena," a CBI officer said.

"Peter Mukerjea has been arrested for his overarching role in the Sheena Bora murder case. From the hatching of the conspiracy to the destruction of evidence, his fingerprint is everywhere. We need to interrogate him in custody. The investigation into his role will be part of a separate supplementary chargesheet," the officer added.

Peter was called for questioning to the CBI's Mumbai office today a little before noon. The interrogation lasted till around 5pm. Around 6pm, Rahul, Sheena's boyfriend and Peter's son from his first wife, was called in.

Around 45 minutes later, Peter was arrested. Peter complained of uneasiness after he and Rahul were brought face to face to be questioned.

A fortnight ago, Peter had moved out of his seafacing apartment in Worli. The apartment is owned jointly by Peter and Indrani.

Sources close to Peter said that the former TV executive, keen to end his marriage with Indrani, had sent feelers of separation to his wife. "But she is not willing to end this marriage so easily," the source said.

A Mumbai police officer who tried to shield Peter is also being questioned by the CBI. The sources said the officer might also be arrested.

The CBI sources said investigators got crucial evidence from Peter's mobile service provider although he had deleted his call records. Mumbai police had not seized Peter's phone, laptop and tablet.
