A group of 128 military veterans on Tuesday expressed support for the agitating farmers, stressed the “jawan-kisan link” and condemned the authorities’ use of force on the protesters.

They urged the Centre to consider the farmers’ demand to repeal the three new farm laws.

“The purpose of this statement is to inform (the) protesting farmers that armed forces veterans unconditionally and unequivocally support their rightful demands being conveyed in a democratic and peaceful manner,” the veterans said in a statement.

“We stand in solidarity with the peacefully protesting farmers, empathise with them, and support their demands. We condemn the use of force on farmers with tear gas and water cannons.”

Admiral L. Ramdas, the former navy chief, issued the statement and it was endorsed by 127 other military veterans.

“We understand the pulse of serving armed forces personnel, 80 per cent of whom are from the farmer background and are a part of the very organic jawan-kisan link. Neglecting the importance of this organic link can seriously affect our country’s security,” the statement said.

“We strongly urge the government to consider the demands of agitating farmers to repeal the laws since no prior consultation with the primary stakeholders was held.”

The veterans pledged to uphold the Constitution and the right of peaceful dissent and democratic protest.

“In the larger interest of maintaining the integrity of the social fabric of our country, we strongly urge the government to accept the demands of (the) agitating farmers and agitating workers.”
