Bangalore: Communal and anti-Left messages have been posted on social media asking people not to donate to the Kerala chief minister's relief fund at a time the Opposition Congress has extended full support to the Left government's efforts to tackle the flood situation.
"Don't donate any money as it will not be used for relief work. It will be used against our country by these Leftists by giving it to Naxals and JNU Tukde Tukde gang," wrote Dhananjay Upadhyay, whose Facebook page describes him as a trainer with Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's Art of Living Foundation.
"Find some other way to help Keralites, not by donating to @CMOKerala," he added.
Another message, from a Keralite named Sankaran Nair, highlighted the purported religions of the flood victims.
"I am sorry for telling the truth. Introspection is necessary. Natural calamities affected on the Christians and Muslims dominated districts in Kerala," Nair wrote.
Referring to Christians, Muslims and communists, he said: "All these groups are doing more harm to the nature and to the living beings for their selfish motives. The same groups are doing foul play with Lord Ayyappa also."
The last comment seemed an allusion to the demand to remove the Sabarimala temple's entry bar on women in the "menstrual age", that is, those between 10 and 50 years.
Nair signed off saying: "Stupid Keralites deserve such calamities or not?!"
The state BJP has distanced itself from these messages but many social media users who appear to share the views of Upadhyay and Nair have been sharing their posts.
Congress MLA and leader of the state Opposition Ramesh Chennithala, who has accompanied chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan to the flood-affected areas, slammed these messages.
"Everybody should ignore this social media campaign against donations to the chief minister's disaster relief fund. Kerala needs each of your hands to rise from this humongous disaster," he wrote on Facebook.
Chennithala, who has donated a month's salary to the fund, told a news conference that each Congress MLA and MP would donate Rs 10,000 and continue to help the flood victims on the ground.
State BJP general secretary K. Surendran said: "We don't have any connection with such people (those posting hate messages). Instead, we have been collecting relief materials and money at the local level to help the people."
He said the party's lone MLA, O. Rajagopal, had donated a month's salary to the fund. "No decision has yet been taken at the party level on donating to the fund, but weare all donating in our own way," he said.
M.V. Jayarajan, the chief minister's political secretary, told The Telegraph that "donations small and big are flowing in" despite the hate campaign.
The Karnataka government has donated Rs 10 crore and the DMK pitched in with Rs 1 crore from Tamil Nadu.
Tamil actor Kamal Haasan has donated Rs 25 lakh and Malayalam actor Mohanlal matched the amount. Tamil actor siblings Surya and Karthi have jointly donated Rs 25 lakh.
