Jaipur, July 16 :
Three persons were killed and 50 injured, five of them seriously, when police opened fire in Bharatpur and resorted to lathi-charge and teargas at Jaipur to control large crowds which had gathered for recruitment to the army today.
Among the 50 people injured in Bharatpur and Jaipur were several jawans and policemen. Some buses and vehicles were also damaged in both places.
Police opened fire in Bharatpur after a section of the 50,000-strong crowd, which had assembled for recruitment, turned violent and clashes broke out, a senior police officer said.
Those killed in the police firing were identified as Shiv Lahari, Samay Singh and Soran Singh of Bayana and Khumer villages, the police said.
According to reports from Bharatpur, the situation spun out of control when the recruitment officers ordered that candidates from Sikar, Jhunjhunu and Churu districts would be allowed to take the test first and others would be given the opportunity later.
The candidates from Bharatpur and adjoining districts opposed the move, leading to a clash between the army recruitment staff and local youth.
The army summoned the district police, who tried to disperse the rampaging mob. When the situation took a serious turn, police resorted to firing.
Prohibitory orders under Section 144 were promulgated in Bharatpur city as a precautionary measure and the situation was brought under control by afternoon, police said.
In Jaipur, police resorted to lathicharge and lobbing teargas shells at the Queens road recruitment centre when a section of the youth indulged in arson and stoning of vehicles.
The crowd turned violent when the army suddenly stopped the recruitment process, DIG of police, Jaipur Range, Ajit Singh said. The police said 30 persons have been arrested. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident, they added.
At least 30 army and police personnel, including a major, an additional superintendent of police and a sub-inspector, were injured. Of the 20 other injured, one is in critical condition, officials said. The seriously injured have been admitted to the SMS hospital in Jaipur.
The civil administrations of Jaipur and Bharatpur have blamed the army for its slackness and failure to adopt effective norms in the recruitment procedures, officials said.
Inspector-general of police (law and order) Hari Narain Meena, said police resorted to firing only when the rampaging mob refused to respond to lathicharge and teargas.
