1 dead, 35 injured in festival

• INDORE: A man on Saturday succumbed to the injuries he sustained during hurling of burning hingots (a hollow fruit stuffed with gunpowder) during the annual Hingot festival at Gautampura town, 55km from here, police said. Thirty-six people were injured on Friday during the festival. Hingot war is an age-old tradition of Gautampura residents which is observed a day after Diwali. In this exercise, warriors are divided into two groups that attack each other with burning hingots, a jungle fruit. PTI

PWD cash power

• NEW DELHI: Delhi lieutenant-governor Anil Baijal has approved a PWD proposal to delegate financial powers to the department's engineering officers to speed up the decision-making processes. The engineer-in-chief, who did not have financial powers, can now take a decision on works that cost between Rs 4 crore and Rs 5 crore. PTI

Ganja arrest

• MANGALORE: A 20-year-old youth has been arrested at Mangalore international airport while allegedly trying to smuggle out 4kg of ganja to Bahrain on an Air India flight, police said on Saturday. The accused, identified as Abhilash from Kasaragod in Kerala, was arrested on Friday while trying to board the flight. PTI

Indian girl vigil

• HOUSTON: Hundreds of people in the US have participated in a prayer vigil for the safe return of a three-year-old Indian girl who disappeared nearly two weeks ago in Richardson city in Texas. Sherin Mathews's adoptive father Wesley Mathews told police that she vanished after he left her outside their home at 3am as punishment for not drinking milk. PTI

Shrines close

• DEHRADUN: The portals of the Himalayan shrines in Kedarnath and Yamunotri were closed for winter on Saturday. The only temple in the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit yet to be closed is Badrinath. PTI

4 fishermen held

• RAMESWARAM: Four Tamil Nadu fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly fishing near Thalaimannar coast in that country's territorial waters early on Saturday. PTI

10 die in truck crash

• SANGLI: Ten labourers were killed after the truck ferrying them overturned in Maharashtra's Sangli district on Saturday. The truck flipped over at a sharp turn amid low visibility. Twenty others were injured, police said. PTI

Transport strike off

• MUMBAI: The employee unions of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation have ended their strike, which was declared "illegal" by Bombay High Court on Friday. PTI

Fake notes

• NEW DELHI: A Delhi court convicted a Haryana resident for using a fake Rs 100 note to purchase a liquor bottle and possessing 56 more notes of the same denomination. PTI

• COLOMBO: Seven members of an Indian cargo vessel have been rescued by Sri Lankan fishermen, according to a Sri Lankan navy official. PTI
