One a regular with his workouts, the other, not so much, but the Khanna brothers — Viraj and Vishesh — share the common will of staying fit. The Telegraph dropped by their Alipore Park Road pad when fashion designer Anamika Khanna’s twin sons were trying out Skulpt At Home. We chatted about the cool and convenient programme and the brothers’ fitness fundas.

How long have you been training?

Vishesh: I think since I started playing golf… that was in Class VIII. That’s when I began training with ace trainers like Ranadeep Moitra and Anwar Wahhab. I wanted to hit the ball longer and be more flexible. I used to play a lot of cricket. So, I would train at the cricket club.

Viraj: For me, it started with golf obviously, but I was not really into it. When I went to college, that’s when I really started training and focusing on my proteins, working out to build muscles. I got into it two-three years back and since then I have continued. In India, it’s been with Prosenjit (Biswas) sir (fitness manager, Skulpt). He is sitting on your head, making sure you work out.

Do you enjoy the gym set-up?

Vishesh: I went with my brother and a couple of friends. So, it was very comfortable… because I have been playing cricket my entire life, I knew what we were supposed to do. So, it wasn’t super new for me. I did the body-weight workout and callisthenics… everything that was free-weight and that would help me with golf. So, ropes and everything.

What is fitness for you, then?

Vishesh: Just functionality and mobility and something that helps you live your daily life in a better way. Also, if you have certain interests and you want to improve upon them…

Viraj: Just like Vishesh said, as long as you are able to do things better on an everyday basis… you should be able to run… be fit and don’t go out of breath when you play a sport… it’s almost a lifestyle and you need do some physical activity every day to keep well mentally and physically.

How do you prep?

Vishesh: Just basic stretching. Suppose I was training with a trainer, he will make me do basic training, basic stretching and warm up and then you start lifting weights.

Viraj: I make sure I eat properly. So, I get a lot of carbohydrates before working out. I do basic stretching and mobility and then I start my workout. I train for an hour.

What’s a typical workout?

Vishesh: When I train with a trainer, it’s 20 minutes of stretching and basically golf-focused exercises. When I train on my own, it’s heavy weights because of the focus of strength training. It just keeps switching. Sometimes, I want to do callisthenics, sometimes body weights.

Viraj: We start with a little bit of mobility and after that we get into strength training and hypertrophy… just basic compound movements like bench press, squats and dead lifts and sometimes golf-oriented workouts.

How do you feel post-training?

Vishesh: When you start training after a long time, that’s when you feel a little uncomfortable, but if you train every day, you will get addicted to the high. It becomes a part of your routine. I train for 45 minutes. It takes a lot of a protein and time to recover and you don’t want to overdo it.

The home gym was whose idea?

Vishesh: It was basically everybody’s idea. Viraj did the research about the equipment. I mostly train myself, alone. This concept by Skulpt makes life easy for someone who is super busy. Suppose you have work hours from nine to seven and you don’t want to go out after that… you want to come and spend time with family… if a trainer comes to your house, you are saving so much time. You have more time to rest and do everything else.

Viraj: This concept of training at home, I think that’s pretty much the only reason why I am a regular. It’s made life easier. You are staying fit throughout the year.

What’s your workout music?

Vishesh: Just rap music.

Viraj: Jaden Smith… hip-hop, rap…

“From the time I have seen Vishesh working out, I have seen him do a good job of the compound movements. I actually didn’t have to struggle a lot showing him those. He was very good with squats and dead lifts. If he is working out regularly, I would definitely give him seven out of 10 (on the fitness meter). Viraj is a regular. We try to do all the strength training on a daily basis. Every day, we try to hit different body parts. We try to start with compound movements and then try to do some isolation as well. We finish with stretching. He is improving day by day. He is getting better at his movements and improving on his strength. At the moment, I would give him 8 or 8.5 out of 10.

How is mom, Anamika, to work out with?

Viraj: She is a lot of fun… she has so much energy.

(“Ma’am has more energy than both of them. She actually doesn’t take too much rest in between sets,” said Prosenjit.)

Who are the fittest golfers you know of?

Vishesh: Internationally everyone keeps talking about Dustin Johnson and Lee Westwood.

Viraj: At least 99 per cent of the people playing golf (internationally), you look at their fitness and the way they look, they are so athletic and that’s the only way they will reach the top.
