Eliminating the record 13-time champions has Manchester City players believing they can deliver the team’s first Champions League title.

Real Madrid’s defensive mistakes by Raphael Varane were seized on by Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus to lead City into a quarter final against Lyon.

They clinched another 2-1 victory against Madrid on Friday after winning by the same score in the first leg in the Spanish capital in February.

“They’re a top club, Real Madrid, the best club in this competition so far — this is massive,” Gabriel Jesus said.

“It’s all about believing. We can make a mistake, so believe — always. And I press, I press a lot. That is one of my powers. I was happy I scored.”

“With the players that we’ve got, there’s no inferiority, we played really well,” Sterling said.

“I take the blame,” Varane said.

In Turin, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace, including an unstoppable long-range goal, to give Juventus a 2-1 win over Lyon but it was not enough as the French side reached the quarter-finals on away goals.

After both sides converted contentious penalties in the first half, Ronaldo struck from out of the blue on the hour but Lyon clung on for a 2-2 aggregate draw.

Pirlo in, Sarri out

Juventus have named their former midfielder Andrea Pirlo as the new manager on a two-year contract, the Serie A champions announced on Saturday. The decision comes after the Turin club sacked coach Maurizio Sarri following the loss to Lyon.
