Bridget Jones Diary (2001) Bridget tries to turn her life around, falls in love with the wrong guy and finally gives in to a snob, even if that involves her running through the snow wearing leopard-print underwear to earn that ever-fleeting kiss, all to Diana Ross’s Ain’t No Mountain High and Van Morrison’s Someone Like You. A classic love story with a classic soundtrack.

Forrest Gump (1994) That film’s immortal opening dialogue –– “Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get” –– is equally applicable to the soundtrack that captures Forrest’s journey, full of ups and downs and love found-lost-and-realised. Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band’s Against The Wind, The Doors’ Break On Through, The Byrds’ Turn! Turn! Turn! make the soundtrack quite a mixed bag.

City of Angels (1998) A brilliant soundtrack accompanies a love story that crosses paths with the idea of the next world. From the haunting Sarah McLachlan number Angel to Goo Goo Dolls’s Iris, it makes one fall in love all over again.

Notting Hill (1999) Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) and William Thacker (Hugh Grant) sit in the park to Ronan Keating’s When You Say Nothing At All or the moment she declares that her stay in England would be indefinite… played to Elvis Costello’s She, this has got to be the mushiest soundtrack of our times.

1942: A Love Story (1994) Sadly, Pancham wasn’t around by the time the film released. One of the most romantic soundtracks ever, the songs were powered by the lyrics of Javed Akhtar and given shape by RD. Kuch na kaho, Ek ladki ko dekha to, Pyaar hua chupke se, Rimjhim rimjhim… each a gem.

Roja (1992) The soundtrack was a watershed moment for Bollywood. From the playful Rukmani Rukmani to the mesmerising Yeh haseen waadiyaan to the simple Chhoti si asha and the powerful Roja, A.R. Rahman gave us a soundtrack that highlighted the power of orchestra-driven music and scored full marks.

The Bodyguard (1992) The soundtrack that made many a heart skip a beat is Whitney Houston’s crowning glory, spawning hits like Run To You, I’m Every Woman, I Have Nothing and the evergreen I Will Always Love You. Pitch perfect soundtrack for a story about a bodyguard who is a knight in shining armour for a singer.

Lootera (2013) Amit Trivedi restricted himself to a handful of singers for the soundtrack, the highlight of which is the SD Burman-inspired Sawaar loon by Monali Thakur. Equally great are Ankahee with its marching band rhythm and Amitabh Bhattacharya and Mohan Kanan on Shikayatein… quite a perfect t soundtrack.

Love Aaj Kal (2009) Pritam’s second outing with director Imtiaz Ali resulted in another gem of a soundtrack. On the one hand are Rahat Fateh Ali Khan on Aaj din chadheya and Mohit Chauhan on Dooriyan, and on the other are the pulsating beats of Thoda thoda pyaar with Sunidhi Chauhan and the funky Chor bazari by Neeraj Shridhar and Sunidhi Chauhan.

Saathiya (2002) A.R. Rahman’s brilliant orchestral soundtrack helped promote the film. Especially the title number. And who can forget the song that has become a staple of any Rahman concert –– O humdum soniyo re (Kunal Ganjawala, Rahman, KK, Shaan, Pravin Mani)?!

Raanjhanaa (2013) Rahman infused romantic and spiritual elements in Tum tak (Javed Ali, Pooja Vaidyanath, Keerthi Sagathia) and it turned out magical. Since the film is set in colourful Benares, he used a wide range of musical instruments to capture the beauty and energy of the place. The result: Tum tak, Banarasiya and the title track.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) What a directorial debut Aditya Chopra made with this SRK-Kajol starrer. And taking us through the emotional turmoil of Raj (SRK) and Simran (Kajol) is Jatin-Lalit’s music — Mere khwabon mein, Mehndi laga ke rakhna to Tujhe dekha to.
