SS Rajamouli protege Ashwin Gangaraju to direct 1770, based on Bankimchandra’s Anandamath

Ashwin Gangaraju, who assisted director SS Rajamouli in Eega and the Baahubali films, is basing his second film, tititled 1770, on Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay’s celebrated novel Anandamath.

“This subject was a huge challenge for me, but with V. Vijayendra Prasad sir writing the adapted story and screenplay, I think what we have on paper is a blockbuster cinematic experience. As a filmmaker, I’m more drawn towards stories that have periodic setups, bigger emotions, scope for larger-than-life action and this is something that suits me perfectly,” said Ashwin, who debuted as a director with the 2021 Telugu film, Aakashvaani.

Ram Kamal Mukherjee has conceived the entire project. The cast is yet to be finalised. Ashwin and his team have started researching the period.

1770 will be made in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Bengali. To be produced by Shhailendra Kkumar, Sujayy Kuttiy, Krishna Kumar B and Suraj Sharma, the project was announced on Independence Day.
